The School · Creative Arts Education

Intentionally different.
Wholeheartedly for children.

Dance and fitness education. A protected childhood. A place where your family belongs.

We built The School around a simple promise: the child comes before the dancer. Always.

We’ve done some exciting things.
Then we became parents.

As dance and theatre instructors, we have over 20 years of experience helping children achieve their creative goals. We’ve been professional dancers, actors, directors, choreographers and other very exciting things that we were wildly talented at!

Krystal and Lindsay
Educators, parents and the people behind The School.

Then we became parents.

And that gig? Let’s just say we’re still working on it.

Children—ours and yours—are the reason we wanted something more. We wanted excellent training in a place that would nurture the whole child, respect families and leave room for a happy childhood. Somewhere we would feel good about sending our own kids.

So we opened our ideal school: The School – Creative Arts Education.

The School through the years

A few moments from our journey.

Behind The School are years of teaching, dreaming and building a place we wanted for our own children. Here’s a little look back.

The beginning.
Our mission

A school we would choose for our own children.

At The School, we follow a trusted, skill-based and trackable curriculum. We provide a safe space, both physically and developmentally, for our students. We hire talented, kind and enthusiastic instructors, and our pricing is always transparent, straightforward and easy to navigate.

Our mission is for your child to love their classes, make new friends and cultivate a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

If things feel different here, that’s intentional.

You may notice things you haven’t seen at other studios, or an approach that feels different from your own experience growing up in dance.

We thought carefully about what we loved about our training, what we wished had been different and what we wanted for our children. Those conversations shaped how we teach, speak to students, approach competition and welcome families.

Education is in our name for a reason.

All of our teachers are educators with dance degrees or equivalent relevant degrees, such as kinesiology. Appropriate teaching certifications, current vulnerable sector checks and CPR-C certification are requirements for teaching here.

We use trusted curricula, including BATD and Discover Dance, to give classes a clear foundation. Even when your preschooler tells you they spent class being a butterfly, there’s a thoughtful lesson behind those wings.

2×staff training sessions
every week

Yes, twice. Every week.

Our teachers continue learning and maintain their certifications because your child deserves educators who take their own development seriously. We stand behind the quality of the education we provide.

Your child can start where they are.

Some children arrive ready to introduce themselves to the entire building. Others need time. Some learn a step immediately; others need another explanation or a few more tries.

We make room for that. What your child can do today helps us choose a starting point. It does not define their potential or determine how much care they receive.

They don’t have to arrive confident, flexible or experienced to belong. All genders are welcome here.

The child comes before the dancer.

We created The School to help change the shame, exclusion and pressure that can sometimes accompany dance training.

As parents, we practise a respectful, child-first approach and teach it to our staff. We do not shame children or use games that exclude them. We set clear boundaries and support students through challenges with their dignity intact.

We have lesson plans and big creative ideas. A child’s needs always come before our agenda as educators.

We believe in a protected childhood.

Kids deserve time for friends, family, rest, play and interests beyond the studio. Extracurricular activities should fit into a full childhood.

Our children’s dance costumes cover midriffs, dancers wear tights, and we choose age-appropriate choreography with comfort and dignity in mind.

Every child deserves respect, whatever they wear; these are the choices we make for our programs.

Their childhood belongs to them.

We are proud of our students. We are also protective of their privacy.

We do not post children’s bodies or identifiable faces online, tag children or post their activities on the same day.

Their privacy comes before our marketing. Respecting the children entrusted to us extends beyond the classroom.

Yes, we compete!

We love the teamwork, excitement and pride that come with performing. Competition is an addition to our education—not the reason we train.

We train to develop technique, artistry, confidence and a love of movement. Wherever students perform, their needs come first.

You deserve to know what it costs.

We’re parents. We understand family budgets and busy calendars.

This is a service, and you deserve clear pricing before you commit, including tuition and additional fees.

Questions are always welcome. We want you to feel informed and comfortable with your decision.

Our philosophy

Nurturing the whole child through the arts.

At The School, we believe it is our responsibility to present the arts to your child in a way that nurtures their whole self.

  • Skills for life.We believe arts participation helps develop motivation, self-confidence, critical thinking, and fine and gross motor skills—giving children tools for a happy, confident life beyond their school years.
  • A connection to community. We believe in giving back through performance opportunities and neighbourhood events, helping students experience the joy of sharing the arts.
  • A clear path to progress. We believe an industry-trusted syllabus helps students and parents follow progress and supports a pathway towards post-secondary arts education, if that is what a student chooses.
  • A joyful introduction. We believe children should be brought to the arts in a fun, engaging and nurturing way, with space for curiosity, creativity and discovery.

Our classroom values draw inspiration from Montessori practice, Janet Lansbury, RIE and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In everyday terms: we listen, build connection, support independence and pay attention to what children need.

A place for your family to feel at home.

And yes, there’s really good coffee.

Welcome to The School. We’re here to inspire, nurture and develop your child’s creativity and artistic skills while caring about the person they are becoming.

We’ll provide free Wi-Fi, really good coffee and a place for grown-up conversation with other families while we’re at it.

Because this is your community, too.

Testimonials

The School not only offers amazing programs for my four year old daughter (who has an array of different interests in the creative arts), but it offers a warm and welcoming space for families to be together. It is truly a pleasure to bring her to her classes every week! I would highly recommend The School to any family looking for engaging classes for their children in an inviting and relaxed environment!

We love it here! My almost 3 year old is currently enrolled in Ballet on Saturdays. She enjoys the classes and looks forward to it...I look forward to it because I can enjoy a cup of coffee & chat with other parents there while she's having a great time in the class! :D We've also attended a birthday party there, which was a fun and enjoyable experience too.
