Contemporary Dance Classes in Mississauga

At The School Creative Arts Education, our Contemporary program gives older dancers the opportunity to explore movement, emotion, musicality and artistry through a more mature dance style. Located in Port Credit, Mississauga, our Contemporary classes begin at age 10 and are available for both competitive and non-competitive dancers.

Contemporary dance blends elements of modern dance, jazz technique, ballet foundations, floorwork, improvisation and expressive choreography. Students learn how to use breath, weight, momentum, contraction, release, suspension and dynamics to create movement with intention and meaning.

How We Teach Contemporary Dance

At The School, Contemporary is taught as an expressive and technical dance discipline. Students are encouraged to move with honesty, curiosity and purpose while maintaining strong technical foundations.

Our instructors guide dancers through structured exercises, floorwork, improvisation tasks, phrase work and choreography. Students learn how to make creative choices while still respecting alignment, musicality, spatial awareness and safe movement patterns.

Our mission is to develop good people through the arts. In Contemporary class, students practise the values of Commitment, Compassion, Respect and Responsibility while developing healthy collaboration, focused perseverance and positive communication.

Technique, Floorwork & Movement Vocabulary

Contemporary dance asks dancers to understand their bodies in a deeper way. Rather than always dancing upright, students explore how movement can travel through the spine, shift into the floor, rebound, suspend, collapse, recover and expand.

Depending on age and level, Contemporary classes may include:

  • Modern dance concepts
  • Jazz technique and musicality
  • Ballet-based alignment and control
  • Contractions and release work
  • Fall and recovery
  • Floorwork and safe transitions
  • Weight transfer and momentum
  • Breath and suspension
  • Improvisation and creative exploration
  • Turns, jumps and travelling phrases
  • Dynamics, texture and emotional intention
  • Choreography and performance preparation

Expression, Maturity & Artistic Growth

Contemporary dance is especially valuable for older dancers because it invites them to think, feel and interpret. Students learn that dance can communicate ideas, emotions and stories without relying on words.

Dancers are encouraged to explore movement quality, personal expression, focus, intention and performance presence. This helps students build artistic maturity while continuing to strengthen technique, coordination and confidence.

Safety & Healthy Development

Because Contemporary often includes floorwork, weight shifts, contractions, inversions, recoveries and dynamic movement, safety and proper progression are essential.

Our instructors teach students how to move in and out of the floor with control, protect joints, use muscular support, understand momentum and build the strength needed for grounded movement. Dancers are encouraged to explore deeply while still respecting their bodies and individual readiness.

Contemporary for Competitive & Non-Competitive Dancers

Contemporary is available for dancers who want a meaningful non-competitive class as well as dancers who are part of our competitive TEAM program. For recreational dancers, Contemporary offers a mature and creative outlet that supports confidence, strength and emotional expression.

For competitive dancers, Contemporary helps develop artistry, musical interpretation, storytelling, versatility and performance depth. It supports training in ballet, jazz, lyrical, acro and other dance forms by helping dancers connect technique with intention.
