What to look for when choosing a dance studio for your kids: Part five of our 5 part series:

Many parents are lost when it comes to choosing the right arts program (ie: Dance, theatre, circus, music, singing, etc) for their kids.

Here’s a few things to look for when choosing an arts program for your kids…

By now we all know that participation in dance programs develops children’s motivation, self confidence, improves critical thinking skills, provides fine and gross motor skill mastery etc etc. (I could go on!)
So the question becomes not “Why” but “which one”. Read below to find out what to look for when choosing a dance studio for your kids.

PART 5

Cost Effectiveness – Quality training should not break the bank! That said, the old adage is true that if it seems too good to be true it probably is. If all 4 previously listed considerations have been met, do some research in your area and find out the average. If studios or schools are secretive or elusive about pricing, walk away!

PART 4

Gender Inclusivity/Unisex classes – This one relates particularly to dance classes but it applies to other creative arts forms as well… As I mentioned above, the benefits of the arts have been well documented for all ages, sexes, genders and needs. However we still see so many classes geared toward girls only. And by that I mean someone’s perception of what girls’ interests should be (but that’s a whole other post!) My point is – if your little person wants to dance, sing, act, tumble or fly, ask questions and find out what steps the instructors and owners take to make sure no one feels compartmentalized or ostracized.

PART 3

Reputable syllabus – Every institution worth it’s reputation will follow a syllabus of cirriculum. In layman’s terms – a great big book of what to teach and how to teach it. There are many reputable dance, theatre, circus, music and vocal institutions that provide materials to Creative Arts Schools. Make sure your chosen school has one and is accountable to a higher organization to ensure quality training.

PART 2

Whole Child Approach – Are you looking for a great school where your kids will participate in arts programming long term? If so you want to be sure that the values you instil at home will be repeated at the school you choose. We all want our kids to learn a skill set – after all that’s part of what you’re paying for. But If the class is solely focused on results (“the perfect turns or jumps”) that may be harmful to your child’s self esteem or social/emotional development.

So by now you know that Boutique fitness training has been around for a while, but how will this help you in becoming a better dancer?

“Imagine going to a class that specializes in your favourite type of exercise, or blends a couple types of exercise that you love into one. You’re surrounded by energetic people in a social atmosphere where people know you. The space itself is attractive and upscale. The class is led by an amazing instructor. They’re playing motivating music, and for an hour, you’re pushed to your limits in a unique blend of fun, intensity, and camaraderie (and maybe a little group pain).

becoming a better dancer takes time, but not THAT much time… say what ???

The experience is intimate. it’s trendy, fun, intense, and you come out feeling like you performed at your peak with a little bit of euphoria you can carry with you for the rest of your day.”

So how will this help me in becoming a better dancer?

Well, remember our last post when we mentioned that our clients are handpicked and placed into small classes?

These small learning pods enable us to train our dancers with more one on one attention, and with our unlimited classes dancers can easily pop into additional classes to work on necessary skills.

Our team of instructors are all working, industry professionals with degrees. They are all 100% committed to the training and have weekly meetings to check in on the progress of each and every single dancer. This is one of those little details that doesn’t take much time but yields BIG results.

This all sounds great, but won’t I need to be in class like, all week long?

Nope!  This is the beauty of Boutique training… Consider this familiar problem:

You train at a “level 2” let’s say. But your competitive jazz routine consists of combined level 2 and 3. So you attend half of one tech class and half of the other class just to learn the combo.  That’s at least 2 extra hours of being at the studio without really getting into technique work. Studios have to book extra classes just to brush up the technique and skills that their students need to be learning during class time. Suddenly 5 hrs a week turns into 8 or 9!

Our Boutique method allows us to schedule training on specific days of the week only. So you always know when you need to be at class. If you want to add more you can attend our free barre and tech classes – but if you have a big test coming up you know you won’t be hit with any surprise rehearsals.

Stay tuned for our post next week – Dance Technique

As dance and theatre instructors we have over 20 years experience helping kids achieve their creative goals. We’ve been professional dancers, professional actors, directors, choreographers and other very exciting things that we were wildly talented at!

Then we became parents.

And that gig? Let’s just say we’re still working on it!

Children (ours and yours) are the reason why we craved something more.

Something that would allow children to train at a facility that would nurture our kids. They would respect our clients and families the way we do at home everyday.

We want a school where children’s whole development and needs are met.

Thus we decided to open our ideal school: The School – Creative Arts Education.

Welcome to our school, we promise to inspire, nurture and develop your child’s creativity and artistic skills. We’ll provide free wifi, really good coffee and a place to grown up conversation with other families while we’re at it!

So by now you know that Boutique fitness training has been around for a while, but what exactly are the benefits of boutique fitness?

“Imagine going to a class that specializes in your favourite type of exercise, or blends a couple types of exercise that you love into one. “The benefits of boutique fitness are many; The experience is intimate. it’s trendy, fun, intense, and you come out feeling like you performed at your peak with a little bit of euphoria you can carry with you for the rest of your day.”

Well, we have applied  this concept to dance training and the results are even better than we imagined!

Our classes are full of hand picked clients who truly share a love of dance and value:

a) proper technique above all

b) a positive, ego-free learning environment

c) access to learn from working, industry professionals

d) clean, beautiful space with all the perks and extras to make them feel special

e) time spent with family and friends (ie: NOT 40hrs at the studio)

One of the main benefits of boutique fitness is that our clients enjoy certain perks that they wouldn’t get a traditionally larger studio.

Some of these include;

Sounds awesome right?

Well, we’ve applied this concept to dance and dance based fitness classes and the results couldn’t be better!

Over the next few weeks we’ll explore exactly what clients can expect from this method of training. We’ll also find out why it will create a technically strong, balanced performer with minimal hours spent in the studio.

  1. Safety!! – obviously this should be the number one concern of all parents. We recommend visiting the site. Take a walk around and know where you’re sending your kids. Are there viewing windows? cameras? Next, make sure all instructors, admin staff, janitors – basically anyone who might come into contact with your child – has an up to date vulnerable sector check. If this info isn’t obvious on the website you should ask. And (while we think this is a no-brainer…) If the answer is non committal or “no we don’t enforce checks” Just. Walk. Away. Children are precious, why take a risk??
